J&K government formation: Centre not to rake up Article 370
New Delhi: Following complex negotiations with the BJP top brass in the past few weeks, the PDP has managed to convince the saffron leadership on some key contentious issues that may also figure in the “Agenda for Governance” that the coalition government in Jammu and Kashmir will follow.
PDP patron Mufti Muhammad Sayeed, who is all set to be the state’s new Chief Minister, is expected to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday. Highly-placed government sources said it was finally decided that the BJP will not raise the issue of Article 370 for at least the next six years, the time the coalition government is in power in the state.
After hectic deliberations between the two sides, it was decided to put the issue of Article 370 of the Constitution, that provides a special status for Jammu and Kashmir, on the “backburner for six years”, a top official said. Sources claimed even on the contentious issue of the AFSPA, the Centre was likely to partially withdraw it from some of the quieter regions of the state.
