Aavin to step up milk production; sales soar
Aavin, currently selling about 11.5 lakh litres milk in Chennai
Chennai: Following increase in the procurement price, state-owned Aavin, Tamil Nadu Co-operative Milk Producers’ Federation Ltd, has registered a steep increase in the procurement, which has shot up to 26.32 lakh litres per day from about 20 lakh litres in the past and it sees scope to enhance this further to 30 lakh litres a day.
Aavin, currently selling about 11.5 lakh litres milk in Chennai with the milk obtained from its dairy farms at Madhavaram, Ambattur and Sholinganallur, has set a sales target of 13.50 lakh litres.
To ensure this, it has been planned to improve the infrastructure at the Madha varam, Ambattur and Sholinganallur farms. Also, the sales target for the district milk producers’ unions has been set at 11.50 lakh litres milk per day - an increase by about 1.50 lakh litre being produced now.
The infrastructure at the milk products farm at Ambattur will be expanded to enhance the production of curd, buttermilk and lassi,” a senior official said.
Though there were initial protests from certain political parties over the hike in procurement prices, which came into effect from Nov.1, 2014, the government had remained steadfast on its decision, which was taken with a view to give a reasonable procurement price to milk producers.
According to sources, milk and dairy development minister B. V. Ramanaa had instructed the officials to meet the government’s objective of ushering in a second white revolution.
