Cops intervene, restore semblance of order

Chennai: An internal clash between two student groups of the Tamil Nadu Dr Ambedkar Law College in the city led to the closure of the college post-noon. Six students, Hari, Abdullah, Boopalan, Karthik, Dilip and Sabari, were injured and got themselves admitted to the Rajiv Gandhi government general hospital, the police said.
When contacted, Esplanade police officials said one of the groups, comprising mostly junior students, had responded to the other group calling for a demonstration inside the campus, which led to the tussle.
The duel escalated into an assault and there was stone pelting and one of the students even came with a knife before the cops rushed to the scene and pacified them. “It was an internal issue and peace was restored. We held talks with the principal and the proceedings in the college were called off for the day,” said a senior police officer. Later in the evening, cops met with college authorities to discuss the course of action after one of the students filed a complaint at the Esplanade police station.
However, police sources said there was previous enmity between the two groups over a misunderstanding and it surfaced again on Wednesday, leading to the attack. The principal of the college, Prof K. Murugadoss, was not available for comment.
The college reopened on February 18 after it was closed two weeks ago following students protest against shifting of the college to the city suburbs. It may be recalled that two groups of students attacked each other on the law college campus two years ago following which former high court Justice P. Shanmugam recommended several steps to avoid students clash.
