Land near golf course to be parade ground of Hyderabad
He had initially planned to have Parade Grounds at the TB and Chest Hospital at Erragadda,
Hyderabad: Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao said that at present there was no place or hall to hold a meeting with 1,000 people. “Even today we don’t have a parade ground. There should be a parade ground under the control of the police, but we don’t have one. If we want to hold a function or a meeting we have to salute the defence ministry and Government of India (for allotment).”
If all goes as per plan, the next Republic Day and Independence Day parades will be held close to the Golconda Fort. The defence ministry-owned sprawling parade grounds in Secunderabad has been used since the British days.
“Hyderabad doesn’t have parade ground of its own. I don’t know why but it’s quite surprising. Many claim they did a lot. Since both the new states are functioning from here, the governor divided buildings to both the states according to his wisdom. We have a Jubilee Hall and it is allotted to us for council meetings. There is no place to hold a collectors’ conference in Hyderabad,” the CM said.
Sources said Mr Chandrasekhar is peeved at making requests to the defence ministry for lease of the Parade Grounds for official functions and political rallies including the one planned by the TRS on April 27 on its foundation day.
Mr Chandrasekhra Rao, who was on the hunt for a suitable site, zeroed in on the huge tract of open land near the golf course. He had initially planned to have Parade Grounds at the TB and Chest Hospital at Erragadda, but subsequently changed the plan. The hospital land is now being planned for the new Telangana Secretariat, which has kicked up a political storm. Last Independence Day, the CM had dumped the regular parade grounds in Secunderabad and hoisted the Tricolour at Golconda Fort, which is under the aegis of Archaeological Survey of India.
