Delhi CM says the law will make the government a property dealer

New Delhi: After over two years, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and social activist Anna Hazare on Tuesday came together to protest against the contentious land ordinance and shared the dais to forge a collective opposition against the Centre’s move.
Mr. Kejriwal was among a host of leaders cutting across party lines who joined the agitation on a day the government introduced the contentious Land Acquisition Bill in the Lok Sabha. Mr. Kejriwal and Mr. Hazare fell apart after the former decided to launch a political party in 2012. It was for the first time after their split that the duo shared a public platform.
To extend his support to Mr. Hazare’s fight against the new land bill, Mr. Kejriwal joined the protest with his Cabinet colleagues and party MLAs. Reaching out to the Delhi rural belt, he said, “As chief minister, I want to announce that no one will be allowed to take land forcibly in the city. If land acquisition is necessary then it will be acquired at market price.”
He said that the compensation prescribed in the new law is not enough as claimed by the government. “What they are claiming to be four times the rate is actually a betrayal. Someone told me, in Meerut, the circle rate is Rs 2,000, the market rate is Rs 20,000. These people say they will pay four times which will be Rs 8,000 while the market rate is Rs 20,000,” he said.
Kejriwal said the new law if implemented, will make the government a property dealer and broker of corporate houses.
