Navy to salvage sunk vessel

Salvaging the vessel that sank on the night of November 6 and resulted in the deaths of five Navy personnel

Visakhapatnam: The Eastern Naval Command has decided to salvage the Torpedo Recovery Vessel (TRV), which is lying 370 metres under the sea, 35 nautical miles off the Vizag coast. The TRV sank last November. The ENC has sent a recommendation to Naval headquarters in New Delhi regarding this.
The Board of Inquiry, that was appointed to look into the mishap, has submitted its report to the Naval headquarters. Earlier, the Navy was in two minds on whether to salvage the vessel or not as it is a costly exercise.
The Navy also does not have the expertise to salvage huge vessels and a private agency has to be roped in. Salvaging the vessel that sank on the night of November 6 and resulted in the deaths of five Navy personnel, can offer vital clues about the mishap, especially what led to the to the sinking of the 110-tonne vessel.
ENC Commander-in-Chief Vice-Admiral Satish Soni said, “The BoI’s report is being analysed by higher authorities. We have sent a recommendation to salvage the TRV. The Navy HQ needs to take a decision on it. We will be able to get a better insight into what actually what went wrong if the TRV is salvaged.”
