Coconut prices have already peaked even though summer is yet to begin

Vijayawada: With summer approaching, the demand for coconuts increases sharply as people. But this year, coconut prices have already peaked even though summer is yet to begin as sufficient stocks are not available.
Coconut prices have gone up from Rs 20 to Rs 30 per piece in Vijayawada. A litre of coconut water now costs Rs 50 to Rs 70. Coconut traders are now importing stocks from Kerala instead of Srikakulam, Vijayanagaram, Vishaka and East Godavari districts.
Trader K. Achaya Naidu said Cyclone Hudhud and the gas leak has hit the coconut crop. He said he used to import three loads from Rajahmundry, but now, quality nuts are not available in local markets.
He said traders were buying 100 coconuts for Rs 2,000 from Kerala. Autorickshaw driver P. Raju said prices might even reach Rs 50 and he might switch to buttermilk.
