End mamool, police warned
Citizen can now directly inform senior officers about mamools
Hyderabad: Senior officers of Cyberabad police have decided to crack down on their own men over the prevalent “mamool” and “collection” issues. Cyberabad commissioner of police C.V. Anand on Monday convened a special meeting with all Station House Officers to warn that departmental actions would be taken against those who extorted money from the public.
Since there was an undeclared conviction among SHOs that the mamools were used for police station maintenance, the Commissioner informed them that the TS government had sanctioned a monthly fund Rs 25,000 to Rs 75,000 for each police station for maintenance purposes. Citizen can now directly inform senior officers about mamools or other forms of corruptions using WhatsApp messenger or landlines.
“Not only law and order police stations in Cyberabad, but traffic, women’s police stations, central crime station, special branch, special operation teams, zonal task forces, Counter Intelligence Cell, and other wings of Cyberabad Police will be given money for maintenance in their respective buildings,” said Mr Anand. “Severe disciplinary action will be initiated in future if any violation of the code of conduct is seen among the officers,” said the Commissioner.
‘Mamool’ to be in good books
Police department sources say that the monthly mamool of each police station is between Rs 1.5 lakh to Rs 4 lakh. A home guard or constable is in charge, known as the collector, who collects money from kirana shops, wine shops, bars and other establishments.
“Mamool is a systemic corruption that grew within the police department. But, it exists almost everywhere in the country, except in a few states. Previously most of the upright officials, who tried to do away with the system, failed because the lower rank officials used to say that the money was used for maintenance of police stations and for infrastructure.” said an IPS officer.
