Shivamogga calm, 61 held, cop suspended

SHIVAMOGGA: The city was limping back to normalcy on Sunday with no fresh incidents reported and people came out to buy essential commodities in morning. However, Section 144 will remain in force for three more days.
The city was hit by communal violence on February 19, which has so far claimed two lives. Most roads wore a deserted look, barring some auto rickshaws, two-wheelers and pedestrians. City buses remained off the roads.
The city continues to remain tense though no untoward incidents were reported till evening.
IGP Eastern Range M. Nanjundaswamy told this reporter that situation was under control. He said that 61 people were arrested on Saturday night and were being interrogated. Meanwhile, other police sources said that a police constable of the intelligence wing, affiliated to the Tunga Nagar Police Station, was suspended on charges of dereliction of duty in connection with the Thursday’s incident in Gajanur. The constable was identified as Mabusab.
On February 19 Popular Front of India (PFI) activists had attacked two people, who were going on a motorbike, and one of them died. Sources said that though the constable was at the spot during the time of incident, he reportedly neither tried to save the victims nor informed his higher officers.
