Bengaluru doctors save Polish woman’s limb from amputation

25-yr-old was injured in Bengaluru-Ernakulam Express derailment

Bengaluru: Ola Ryzczak (25) from Poland, who was seriously injured in the major Bengaluru-Ernakulam Intercity Express derailment during a Valentine’s Day trip to India, has been declared fit to be discharged from hospital.

After a series of surgeries performed on her by the doctors at Sparsh Hospital, the surgeons say that the patient is fit to be discharged. "Ola is ready to go home," said Dr Ashok Koul, Chief of Plastic, Cosmetic, Microvascular and Hand surgery at Sparsh Hospital. However, the doctor does add a word of caution, "But she is still not ready to walk around."

"She had two main problems -- one was the fracture and the other was the injury to the artery that supplies blood. There was no pulse at the ankle level and little or no movement of the toes when she was brought to us," says Dr Ashok. He says that his team had three major issues which they had to address. "The first was reconstructing the artery. Second was temporarily fixing the limb with external fixators like rods and screws. Lastly, a fasciotomy was done -- which is a limb-saving procedure used to treat acute ‘compartment’ syndrome."

The relieved doctor adds, "Now, the blood circulation in her leg is normal and the blood supply has been restored. The fracture too has been fixed, but we need to examine the fracture again after another week," says Dr Ashok.

Luckily for the young Ola, there were no additional bruises or solid injuries. She’s fortunate that her limb has been salvaged by the doctors. "Chances of amputation were very high. A little later and she might have just lost her limb. But she came to the hospital on time and we started with the surgery," adds Dr Praveen, resident plastic surgeon at Sparsh.

Dr Ashok adds, "She is fit for discharge but is advised not to move around.

"If she were a local resident there would have been no problem but there are geographical limitations right now. Her family is looking at the logistics and we have let them take the decision. At present she is fit for discharge but the family will take two more days to decide.”
