A flavoured twist: Marathi play with Hyderabadi touch
Hyderabad: Udaan Performing Arts gave a Hyderabadi twist to a Marathi play Gappa, by Yogesh Soman. Titled Miya Biwi Ke Mantakaan, it was translated and directed by city’s Saurabh Gharipurikar.
There was a lot of improvisation, to blend it perfectly for the Hyderabad audience. The plot revolves around a couple and what they chit chat (mantakaan) in a park. The wife plans to start a business, so she can make enough money and save for their daughters’ wedding, while the husband prepares her for the scenario.
“Hyderabadi comedy isn’t new, but the process of bringing a Hyderabadi twist to a Marathi play was interesting. I have always been looking forward to act in one,” says Rahul Reddy, who played the role of the ‘miya’, adding, “Hyderabad is known for its language and food, so the connectivity with the audience was more.”
