SRM college students design electric racing car

Car is being readied to hit the tracks at an international formula racing event in Italy mid-September 2015
Chennai: A group of young, innovative minds from SRM College has devised an electricity-run sports car, Voltaic, which is being readied to hit the tracks at an international formula racing event in Italy mid-September 2015.The rear wheel drive car that was the brainchild of 4ZE college racing team, runs on lithium-polymer batteries and is powered by a pair of DC motors; it was unveiled at the college auditorium here on Friday.
The group started on the design in 2012 and had students from different departments, including Mechanical, Computer and Electrical, working as a team that was well-supported by auto consultants and other professionals, said Dr Leenus J. Martin, team principal and head of Automobile department. The electric car, which weighs 290 kg and can attain a speed of up to 110 kmph, has a range of 23 km on a single range full charge and the range of the vehicles can be further raised by increasing the quantity of cells used, said Shubang Mittal, chief technical officer and final-year Automobile student.
The car is environment-friendly as it has zero emission and adheres to Formula SAE rules, says the group. But there are a few tests that need to be performed before the car is tried to the tracks such as static, dynamic endurance and safety steps so that the vehicle is fit enough to hit the roads, said Muthamizh Chelvan, director of Engineering and Technology department. The car, which has a battery support of 148 volts, had a test run on the campus after the event which saw students cheering all through.
