Crime stats on murder show upward trend
Total number of crimes against women has come down in 2014 in Tamil Nadu to 6,826
Chennai: The number of murders for gain, dacoities and burglaries in Tamil Nadu increased in 2014, according to the latest crime records bureau statistics.The number of murder for gain across the state went up from 121 in 2013 to 127 in 2014, recording an increase of 5 per cent. Similarly, the number of dacoities went up from 83 to 101 in 2014, recording an increase of 22 per cent.
All over the state, the number of burglaries increased by 3 per cent to 5,266 from 5,125 in 2013. The number of thefts increased by 0.16 per cent to 11,969 from 11,950.“You will have to see the increase in these types of crimes as a socio-economic problem. Our society has changed into a consumer society and success is measured by your flashy lifestyle.
Even educated youth are thinking of short cuts to become successful and end up committing crimes,” says noted activist lawyer Sudha Ramalingam. Youth today feel that there is not much opportunity for them to ‘become successful’ by honest ways, she added.
Not all crimes have gone up in 2014. According to the CRB data, there was a 10 per cent decrease in the number of robberies. The total number of robberies has come down to 1,969 from 2,186. The total number of murders has also decreased by 7 per cent to 1,678 from 1,806 in 2013.
