Oscar-winning actress Halle Berry has revealed that she was a victim of domestic violence when she was five-year-old. Berry, 48, said this is the reason behind supporting the Jenesse Centre, the oldest domestic violence intervention programme in Los Angeles, reported E!Online.
“I’m a victim of domestic violence,” she said at unite4: Good’s unite4: Humunity gala, where she was honoured for her work with the centre.
“I wasn’t married to a man that beat me up, but my mother was,” she added. Berry was very small when she witnessed the horrific abuse. She said her mother was beaten “day after day”. She watched her get “kicked down stairs” and hit in the head with a wine bottle when she wasn’t looking.
“Knowing that she wanted nothing more than for her little girls to see her be empowered and be a woman of strength, but having no way to make that happen was heartbreaking for me. I saw far too much and have suffered the damage of being a child of domestic violence,” Berry said.
