Greenpeace account to be defrozen

‘Atleast four other accounts of ‘same NGO remain frozen as per government order’

New Delhi: The Narendra Modi government has shown first signs of a course correction in its dealings with NGOs after the issue has generated heat over the last several months.

The Union home ministry has ordered defreezing of one of the frozen accounts of Greenpeace after locking horns with the NGO over its foreign funding. The MHA has also communicated to the Intelligence agencies, particularly the Intelligence Bureau, that they must do their homework well before suggesting any kind of punitive action against the NGOs. The MHA has also decided to meet representatives of NGOs.

The move to defreeze the Greenpeace account follows the Delhi HC order where the court questioned the basis of the government’s move of acting against the NGO.

“While one account has been defrozen, atleast four other accounts of the same NGO remain frozen as per the government order,” a top official said.

However, top officials made it clear that the Central agencies have been asked to establish their cases against the NGOs in a substantive manner.
