Andhra Pradesh capital woes: Farmers to go on hunger stir

‘Conduct a referendum about the acquisition of fertile land for the capital’

Guntur: Farmers unwilling to give their land for the new capital under LPS conducted a mass hunger stir against LPS at Undavalli on Sunday. AP Congress Committee president, N. Raghuveera Reddy, CPM state secretary, P. Madhu and other leaders participated in the Rajadhani Rythu Deeksha and demanded the state to conduct a referendum about the acquisition of fertile land for the capital.

Mr Reddy ridiculed that CRDA is a Chandrababu real estate development agency and not capital region development authority as it is trying to give valuable land collected freely from farmers to foreign companies on huge lease amounts.

Mentioning the slow pace of land collection, he asked the state to conduct a referendum with secret ballot and to act according to the wishes of the majority in the referendum.

He added that APIIC has identified 35,000 acres of government land in Guntur and there is no need of converting fertile land into buildings if these government lands are used for the capital.

Land pooling scheme extended to February 28

Minister for agriculture P. Pulla Rao has said that the last date for offering lands under the LPS has been extended to February 28 and appealed to farmers of the capital region to cooperate with the government to build a world-class new capital in Tullur. He visited Penumaka on Sunday to participate in the Srinivasa Kalyanam in Sree Vyshnava Divya Kshetram.

Speaking to the press, the minister commented that the Congress is dead and that the YSR Congress is busy defending themselves from corruption charges. He alleged that these parties were provoking the farmers of the capital region and conducting deekshas and dharnas.
