Hyderabad: Andhra Pradesh and Telangana cops clashed with lathis at the Nagarjunasagar Dam on Friday evening. In the water war for control over the dam, six to seven policemen sustained minor injuries.

As series of mediation meetings failed during the day, warring police forces attacked each other with sticks. Both Andhra Pradesh and Telangana cops alleged that the other group had trespassed into their area. Andhra Pradesh police claimed that Telangana irrigation staff, along with Telangana cops, barged in forcibly to stop water being released and they tried to restrain them. The clash started at 6.30 pm and despite power being cut off, the cops continued to fight and the scene appeared like a battlefield.

Police forces lead by Miryalaguda deputy superintendent of police Sandeep and halia inspector of police Parthasarathy on the TS side and Gurajala DSP Nageswara Rao and CI Mallaiah on the AP side, led the troops in the clash. Miryalaguda DSP Mr Sandeep said, “Four to five constables of Telangana police sustained minor injuries. Nothing more than that. As the injuries are minor they were given first aid. We were in our area and the AP police trespassed into our area. Senior officials are talking to each other.”

No cases were booked till the last reports came as the top cops of both states were in talks. Guntur rural superintendent of police Ramakrishna said, “There are no injuries… may be small scratches. We are at the spot. The situation is now peaceful and we are in discussions.”

Andhra Pradesh DGP J.V. Ramudu spoke to his counterpart, Telangana State DGP Anurag Sharma. Mr Ramudu who reviewed the situation, said, “We are exercising a lot of restrain. We are hoping that an amicable solution will be reached with talks at proper level.”
