BJP set to be weaker in Rajya Sabha
New Delhi: The fallout of the BJP’s humiliating defeat at the hands of the Aam Aadmi Party in the national capital could now reverberate in Parliament during the crucial Budget Session beginning in a fortnight from now.
The resurgence of the AAP would give the Opposition parties, including the Congress, an opportunity to group under one umbrella in the Rajya Sabha, where the Narendra Modi-led dispensation is still trying to find its feet even after nine months of coming to power.
The government has been finding it almost impossible to get Bills through the Rajya Sabha ever since it came to power and several legislations are pending in the Upper House. The Congress enjoys majority in the Rajya Sabha and when all Opposition parties join it, it becomes absolutely difficult for the government to cobble up a majority.
Though the AAP, which has won 67 seats out of total 70 in Delhi, will be able to make a debut in the Upper House only in early 2018, the party’s near-sweep in the elections could be used by parties like the Trinamul, JD(U), SP and the BSP to corner the BJP government.
The government faces a real test in Parliament this Session as it needs to replace six ordinances with legislations that includes the one on land acquisition that has already created ripples.
