Open defiance: Motorists fleeced at parking lots

Contractors fail to demarcate allotted area; price boards missing

Hyderabad: Contractors running Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation-approved parking lots in the city are flouting rules set by the corporation and getting away with it, as monitoring of their operations is lax.

The contractors are supposed to operate within designated areas allotted to them the demarcated parking-lot as per the lease agreement but not a single parking lot in the Secunderabad area is following this rule.

Also, contractors of the GHMC parking lots in the twin cities are charging more than the standard government-approved fee. While one of the contractors near Paradise hotel is charging Rs 30 for a four-wheeler, another located on the other side of the road is charging Rs 25.

While a “parking full, kindly seek alternate parking” board should be put up in case a parking site is full to avoid confusion, many contractors along the stretch from Paradise to Patny are encroaching public spaces to avoid losing customers. However, not one of them has been fined till date after the renewal of lease in November last year, said the GHMC officials.

Responding to the problem, a senior GHMC official said: “Things such as how much a contractor is charging, or if any land has been encroached upon or if they are involved in any regularities can’t be monitored on a daily basis. But we do monitor these things regularly.”

According to details provided by GHMC, six out of 16 parking lot contractors in Secunderabad have secured the lease without depositing the mandatory 50 per cent of the lease amount, which they have to pay prior to the start of the agreement. The senior GHMC official has refused to comment on the issue.
