New Delhi: The Congress on Saturday rejected the exit poll projections for Delhi Assembly elections which showed it to be a laggard with not more than five seats in the 70-member House.
“We respect the opinion of psephologists but the ground level response indicates upswing for Congress candidates across Delhi. We sincerely hope that election results on 10th will reflect this principal grassroots support for Congress,” party spokesman Randeep Surjewala said.
He was reacting to the exit polls that have predicted a majority for the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) with one of them giving it as high as 53 seats. Earlier in the day, high-profile voters of the New Delhi constituency, the Gandhis, turned up early at the polling booths to vote for the Delhi Assembly elections in which the Congress is likely to face a huge drubbing as the main contest is between the AAP and the BJP.
Congress president Sonia Gandhi used her franchise at a polling booth in Nirman Bhavan in central Delhi at around 9.30 am. Former chief minister Sheila Dikshit, Delhi Congress president Arvinder Singh Lovely and former Delhi minister Kiran Walia, party's candidate from the New Delhi constituency, accompanied Mrs Gandhi.
