Wakf stakes claim to land acquired by Metro

Board has issued notices to GHMC and Metro Rail Ltd asking them not to pay compensation

Hyderabad: The Telangana State Wakf Board has issued notices to the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation and the Hyderabad Metro Rail, asking them not to pay compensation to third parties with regard to Wakf properties acquired for the project.

The Board has informed the GHMC and Metro Rail Ltd that there are more than a dozen cases pertaining to Wakf properties located on the stretch from Nampally to Chaderghat Bridge via Moazzam Jahi Market and Putlibowli that are pending litigation for more than two decades and that some persons have claimed rights over the properties.

M.J. Akbar, special officer to the Wakf Board, said there were several properties, mainly at the Moazzam Jahi fruit market and besides Vikrant theatre, that belonged to the Wakf Board. Many of them had been given on rent more than three decades ago. He said there were complaints that Trusts and mutawallis (caretakers) had clandestinely entered into agreements with builders to develop the lands.

While examining the complaints, the Board noticed that more than two dozen of such properties belonged to the Wakf and some of them had been acquired for Metro rail. The Board has thus informed the land acquisition officer not to disburse compensation to third parties and to remit the same to the Board, he added. “We erected boards in the properties identified and are pursuing the matter with the GHMC and Metro authorities for compensation,” he said.
