Delhi elections: Scuffle outside Kiran Bedi’s poll office

New Delhi: It was a day of high drama in the politically-charged national capital on Monday. BJP workers clashed with lawyers outside an election office of party’s chief ministerial candidate Kiran Bedi in her Krishna Nagar constituency on Monday evening, leaving three persons injured. A group of around 200 lawyers, who had been agitating against the BJP’s decision to nominate Ms Bedi as the CM candidate, protested outside her office, after which a scuffle broke out between them and BJP supporters.

Bedi posted about the attack on Twitter: “My BJP constituency office in Krishna Nagar has been attacked. Informed some injured too. Cutting short rallies, rushing back.” The Delhi BJP has condemned the attack, saying it is a repeat of the attack on the BJP national headquarters by AAP activists before the 2014 Lok Sabha Elections.

Earlier in the day, the BJP received a jolt when Bedi’s campaign in-charge, Narendra Tandon, decided to quit the party, accusing the chief ministerial candidate of a “dictatorial” attitude. However, after the intervention of BJP president Amit Shah, he decided to withdraw his resignation. He then issued a statement saying that it was an “emotional decision to quit the BJP”.

Mr Tandon’s resignation letter, which was earlier accepted by Delhi BJP chief Satish Upadhyay, read: “I resigned from the BJP because of Bedi’s dictatorial attitude. It was difficult for me to continue.”
