As per the latest data, 170 injuries due to bus accidents were recorded by traffic cops
Hyderabad: The poor maintenance of city buses and the absence of doors and electronic display boards resulting in low night visibility are causing accidents and minor injuries to passengers.
As per the latest data, 170 injuries due to bus accidents were recorded by traffic cops. Many more minor injuries occur every day due to poor maintenance. But go unrecorded, said an RTC official.
Often problems like the lack of doors result in footboard travelling and on an average every day 20 to 50 passengers suffer minor injuries due to this. Also most buses do not have modern destination displays and follow the age old system of painted boards. This makes it difficult for passengers to see the board until the bus is a few feet away.
“This has also led to minor injuries while boarding and getting down as passengers try to get in while others try to get out in a hurry,” said an official. As per the latest data of the Hyderabad Traffic police, RTC buses were involved in 248 accidents in 2014 . Of these, 170 were accidents resulting in injuries, as per RTC officials.
While the RTC does not maintain a record of injuries, officials admit that footboard traveling is widespread and that 60 per cent of bus related accidents happen while getting on and off buses.
RTC bus drivers are also known for their intimidating driving style. “A few weeks back I fell down while getting down as the bus halted only for a few seconds,” said P. Rama Devi.-
