No power hike till GHMC polls
Hyderabad: The continued delay of submission of average revenue receipts and power tariff proposals to the Electricity Regulatory Commission by the Telangana discoms gives rise to speculation that the government will not take it up till elections to GHMC are over.
The fourth deadline to submit ARRs to ERC ended on Saturday with the two discoms of Telangana failing to turn up at the ERC office. Sources in the discoms said they have sought further extension till February 7.
Though the exercise of the discoms was over long back, the report has been held back as the government constituted a GoM consisting of six ministers to look into power issues.
Sources in the government said it is a deliberate attempt to postpone the issue with an eye on the ensuing polls to GHMC. This is because the government, which cannot avoid power crisis in the peak summer, does not wish to invite the wrath of people with a tariff hike. If hefty power bills add up to the power cuts, it would have a negative effect in the polls, sources explained. If the government decides to hold polls, the code would automatically halt any power hike decision, they said.
