Dirty water raises a stink
Officials of the Water Board seem to be least bothered about complaints from consumers
Hyderabad: While the government has been talking about giving priority to water quality and good water supply, officials of the Water Board seem to be least bothered about complaints from consumers.
Ikram Khan, a resident of Beerappagad in Uppal said, “Since the last 15 days, we have been receiving stinking water. There seems to be a leak in the pipeline resulting in contamination of water. Though we have complained to the local Water Board office, the issued is not resolved yet.” He adds, “This is a problem faced by the whole colony.”
Similar is the plight of residents of First Lancer area in Masab Tank. “We have been receiving polluted water since over a year. The water stinks and is murky in colour. We get sick often, though we boil the water and drink. Now we have to buy mineral water. Many complaints have been lodged over the phone but no action has been taken.”
Meanwhile, residents of RK Society, Borabanda have to complain about irregular water supply once in seven days. “From January 8 to January 15, our society received water only once. The situation is the same even now. And when we did receive water, it was for 10-15 minutes. Though we complained to the officials at Moosapet office, the problem remains,” said a resident.
The residents of Sitarambagh, the locality adjacent to Jaganadha Swamy temple, have to walk through drainage flowing on the streets, an issue that has not been attended for a year. “Since many years, drainage water is flowing on our streets. I have lodged several complaints but no action has been taken,” said K. Vasavadatta Ramana.
When contacted, the officials said that all complaints are attended to immediately. “Those that have not been resolved will be looked into for immediate action,” said an executive director of the water Board.
Tankers take up to 15 days to deliver water:
Residents of many areas receive water through tankers, and they want the Water Board to streamline the system, so that they don’t fall prey to the water tanker mafia who charge exorbitant amounts.
K. Vamshi Krishna, a resident of Alwal, said, “Often people living in the apartments have to book the tankers as the water supplied is not sufficient. However, the Water Board’s tankers take between 7 and 15 days to deliver water after the booking is made.”
S. Madhusudhan Rao, another resident, said, “Private tankers charged as much as Rs 3,000 for 5,000 litres of water.” It was also found that most of the private tankers supply water only in the areas where their plants are located, and some surrounding localities to keep the costs low.
