Top city doctor to help Andhra Pradesh hospital
GUNTUR: The oldest Guntur Government Hospital (GGH) is set to become the main hospital of the state in view of the new capital at Tullur of Guntur district.
GGH is making arrangements in Podila Prasad millennium block within its premises to start heart surgery block under PPP by Sahrudaya Health, Medical and Educational Trust (SHMET).
Famous cardiothoracic surgeon Dr Alla Gopalakrishna Gokhale, who has experience of conducting more than 10,000 open heart surgeries will render his services to the GGH.
Treatment and surgery for heart and lung disorders were available until 10 years ago but later these services were stopped in the absence of specialty doctors and the availability of the same in the NIMS, Hyderabad.
With cardio surgery unavailable in the Vijayawada government hospital and all other government hospitals of Guntur district referring cases to the GGH, it has become main hospital for the coastal districts with 1,500 beds and nearly 5,000 patients per day treated as outpatients.
Despite repeated demands for cardio services in GGH, the non-availability of cardiothoracic surgeon had restricted the government’s ability to start cardio services.
However, Dr Gokhale, an alumnus of the Government Medical College (GMC), Guntur recently responded and agreed to start cardio services in PPP mode through SHMET.
