Chinese woman prosecuted for selling her new-born baby

Huang told her family that the baby died soon after birth

Beijing: A woman from central China's Henan Province has been prosecuted for selling her newborn baby for USD 7,000, local officials said.

The woman surnamed Huang conspired with an obstetrician in a Xinxiang County clinic to sell her newborn for 42,000 yuan (about USD 7,000).

The doctor, who helped Huang in selling the baby, was also prosecuted, state-run Xinhua news agency reported today.

The case came to light in August last year when Huang's mother-in-law complained to the police that her grandson had been sold.

Huang told her family that the baby died soon after birth, but a relative discovered that the boy had actually been sold.

During the investigation, Huang said she had a son with her former husband, but always quarrelled with her current husband and was worried that the new baby would affect the life of her first child.

The doctor was paid 7,000 yuan for helping her find the couple who bought the boy, officials said. The boy is now in the care of his grandmother.

Further investigation is under way.
