Capital shocker: 220 kids in bonded labour freed in Hyderabad

Kids were brought from Bihar’s districts like Gaya, Nalanda, Nawada and Jahanabad

Hyderabad: Around 220 child labourers were rescued in the biggest child rescue operation in Hyderabad in the early hours of Saturday. In the rescue bid the South Zone police raided bangle manufacturing units in the Bhavanin-agar area of Hyderabad.

South Zone DCP V. Satyanarayana said that the main child labour racketeers are a local leader named Yaseen Pehalwan and his two sons. Police arrested them along with 19 brokers who brought the children aged between 7 and 15 years from remote villages of Bihar to work for meagre wages.

Police officials were shocked to find 15 to 20 kids crammed in small rooms. Every child was a forced and bonded labourer and was made to work 13 to 15 hours a day. The owners had fixed CCTV cameras inside the rooms and manufacturing units in order to monitor the kids and they used to torture the kids if they took rest.

The police raid was a cordon-and-search and the team of policemen went to search areas at Talabkatta as part of anti-terrorism checks. However, they received a tip-off about the child labourers and the search operation turned into a rescue operation. Police raided at least 14 units from early morning.

“There were 217 boys and three girls forced to work in the manufacturing units. They were made to work in hazardous conditions and were put up in rooms without proper ventilation. They were paid Rs 1,000 to Rs 2,000 per month and were forced to work every single day in a week. They were also never let out,” said the DCP.

The children were brought from Bihar’s districts like Gaya, Nalanda, Nawada and Jahanabad.
