What’s a ghati party?

Some of the cheesiest Bollywood songs ever, have now found a new fan following

We don’t admit to it easily, but it’s very much there our love for cheesy, explicit Bollywood songs especially the Govinda or Kumar Sanu-centric ones of the ’90s, the Sarkaailo Khattiya Jaada Lage types… guess you get the drift. This preference surfaces usually in intimate gatherings such as a house party. Without these Bollywood numbers, at least towards the end, a night out does not seem quite complete, whether or not you are sloshed!

And if the word-of-mouth success of ghatiparty.com is anything to go by, then Indians, in India, Singapore, the USA… everywhere, are in love with these songs.

This is what ghatiparty.com offers three playlists. The first is “I’m Too Cool For This”, a compilation of English songs; the second is “Ghatipan in Control”, this is your latest, good-to-hum-and-dance Hindi songs and then there is the “Ghatipan Heaven” with Sarkaailo Khattiya, Tum Toh Thehre Pardesi, Kabootar Ja Ja and more, basically a mix of songs that are either high-on-energy, or so slow that you can make yourself a drink again or just laugh at the lyrics.

The creator of these playlists, Arpit Rai says that it is the last set of 25 songs that are really “Ghati”. The techie, who is based out of Mumbai and has even lived in Vizag, explains, “Ghati or dehati means uncouth, uncultured, or sort of wild. In our parties, we start off with English numbers, change to latest Hindi songs and as the mood sets in, switch on the Heaven mode… when the time is right to break free, dance or roll down laughing.”

“The idea came when I was partying with my friends in Singapore, where I used to work. Every three minutes, the songs would need a change, and this would break the flow of our conversations. So I created the playlist,” says the 30-year-old.

Though the website has been around since 2012, it was only last November that it was listed as one of the “11 Indian websites you didn't know existed”.
