‘I do not do films for awards’
Whether it’s goofing around with a dog in It’s Entertainment or tackling terrorists in Baby, Akshay Kumar is always at ease. And after decades in the industry, he says that this is what keeps him going — films with different flavours.
“Earlier, if one filmmaker would make a romantic film, the entire fraternity would follow his footsteps. And films based on the same genre did work. But now the audiences get fed up easily and everyone tries different genres. We need to take risks and only after a film does well can we vouch for our choice,” he says.
Inspired by different scripts
“I always look forward to stories that allow me to perform differently. Therefore I chose Its Entertainment, Baby and now I am doing a film that’s about airlifting. As soon as I heard the story of this untitled film, I was inspired by it… I work continuously for 50 or 60 days for a film and throughout, I live the character day in and day out. But once I’m done with it I start thinking about something new. I consciously choose newer roles as audiences want to be entertained.”
Equation with Neeraj Pandey
When asked whether he was working with Neeraj Pandey in his next film because he was a National Award winning director, Akshay laughs and says, “It’s not that, Neeraj is a very good director and he knows his job well. I do not do films for winning awards. His scripts are always strong.”
On his Army background
“My father was from the Army background. So whenever I perform the role of an Army personnel I feel very honoured and proud, I always want to give something to them through my character. I feel like I am doing a little bit of my duty towards my country by at least giving some message to the people. “Baby will also have a message. However, it is a normal film; it does not have any patriotic song or any lecture on patriotism. But yet in my own way all my films do have little patriotic messages.”
