Delhi police focus on Shashi Tharoor, Pakistani journalist Mehr Tarar
New Delhi: Former Union minister Shashi Tharoor, in his letter to Delhi police commissioner Bhim Sain Bassi, is believed to have raised questions on the probe into the alleged murder of his wife Sunanda Pushkar.
Mr Tharoor, who is likely to be questioned by the special investigating team (SIT), sought to know what took the Delhi police so long to register a murder case. Mr Tharoor might be called in after the police interrogates others in connection with the case, including the hotel staff.
Mr Tharoor had on Friday said he was very troubled with the conclusion arrived at during the investigation and demanded an impartial and speedy investigation free of political pressure. Meanwhile, the police is taking a hard look at the statement of journalist Nalini Singh, where she has alleged that according to Sunanda, Mr Tharoor was “going to divorce her after the 2014 polls”.
Her statement to the subdivisional magistrate, a copy of which is in possession of this newspaper, also mentions the alleged relationship between Mr Tharoor and Pakistani journalist Mehr Tarar. Ms Singh said in her statement that the relationship between Mr Tharoor and Ms Tarar was being “encouraged by Tharoor’s family”.
She claimed that this information was revealed to her by Sunanda before her death. The statement was recorded in the presence of SDM Alok Sharma and Sarojini Nagar police station SHO Atul Sood. The statement said that Sunanda had told Ms Singh about an alleged trip of Mr Tharoor to Dubai in June 2013 that apparently worsened the relationship. Ms Singh’s statement also talks of “some other woman” besides the Pakistani journalist.
