40 women sterilised in torchlight in Jharkhand, claims BJP MLA
Ranchi: In a shocking incident, nearly 40 women were sterilised in Chatra district of Jharkhand, guided only by torchlight.
According to sources, the women were moved out of the operation theatre and forced to sit in the corridor. Without any medical attendants, stretches or blankets, the women were not even offered any post-operation care.
The incident was filmed by a local journalist.
A BJP MLA on Saturday raised the issue in the Jharkhand Assembly. MLA Jaiprakash Singh Bhokta said despite the Chief Secretary ordering proper arrangements for sterilisation camp, the family planning surgery had been done in torchlight recently.
Bhokta demanded to know on whose direction it had been carried out.
In November 2013, nearly 13 women who were sterilised in Chhattisgarh had died due to medical negligence. Substances like rat poison was found in medicines given to them.
