One dies, 6 injured in LPG blast

One of them succumbed to his burns at the hospital

Chennai: One person died and six others were injured in two separate fire accidents triggered by LPG blazes in the city on Thursday.

In one incident in the Thousand Lights police limits, five of a family were injured in the blaze. One of them succumbed to his burns at the hospital.

Police said that the blaze occurred at the residence of Megana Mary (55) who lives with her sons, C.Vadivelu (33), C.Om Prakash (30), his wife Menaka and the couple’s two-year-old daughter, the house located on Abbas Ali Khan 5thstreet in Thousand Lights.

On Thursday morning, at around 7 am, Om Prakash’s wife Menaka switched on the lights in the kitchen when the blaze occurred.

All the occupants were rushed to the Kilpauk Medical College where Vadivelu succumbed to his injuries at around 5 pm, police said.

Megana Mary and her granddaughter were sleeping in another room and thus escaped with minor injuries, police said.

In another incident in Ayapakkam, two temple priests suffered burns in an LPG blaze inside the temple premises on Thursday morning. Police said that the septuagenarian priests, Ayyapan (73) and Bala Nambiar (75) of I.C.F came to the temple at around 4.30 am and went about their work when the blaze occurred.

Investigations revealed that they had forgotten to shut the LPG valve before leaving on Wednesday.

They were moved to KMC for treatment.
