LG to drop Android Wear in next smartwatch
It seems like LG is opting out of Android Wear for their future smartwatch wearables. According to the WallStreet Journal, LG is planning to drop Google’s operating system for the wearables and will opt for a WebOS-based operating system for the future smartwatches.
Developed by Palm, and then taken over by HP, LG now owns the operating system platform and is promoting the WebOS operating system, and we may see the next LG smartwatches based on WebOS around 2016.
LG has already launched a few smartwatches with Google’s Android Wear and the tech giant will now implement the new operating system in not only their smartwatches, but also into their future smart television sets. LG also plans to go with WebOS across most of their smart devices, which include thermostats, refrigerators, and washing machines and even as far as automobiles.
WebOS was originally developed by Palm and then bought over by HP for further development, which was later sold off to LG in 2013. LG is now planning to make WebOS into an ecosystem of its own. Samsung is on a similar path with Tizen OS and has already debuted a smart television on the new operating system.
