Will sleep near harvest: Farmers
Farmer Appikatla Muralikrishna was the latest victim of farms being burnt
Guntur: Farmer Appikatla Muralikrishna was the latest victim of farms being burnt in opposition to the AP capital land pooling scheme.
Some farmers noticed smoke coming from the puris and informed Muralikrishna, who rushed to the farm, to find two of the puris burning. Farmers called fire services and tried to control the flames by pouring water, but it was in vain as two of the stacks were reduced to ashes.
Guntur range I.G. P.V. Sunil Kumar and Guntur SP Rajesh Kumar inspected the spot and pressed a team into action. They collected details about the incident from Mr Muralikrishna and said that special teams had been formed to investigate the case. Mr Muralikrishna said that his family had no disputes with anyone and they could not understand the reason behind the fire.
Meanwhile, local farmers K. Venkateswarlu, G. Srinivasulu and others said that from the last week of December to the second week of January was the harvesting season and farmers kept the harvested paddy in puris before shifting them to mills to produce rice.
They said that farmers would now have to sleep in the farmlands to protect the harvest and demanded that the government take stern action against the culprits to put a stop to these incidents.
YSR Congress Mangalagiri MLA A. Ramakrishna Reddy suspected that the government was trying to create fear among farmers opposing land pooling in the capital region through the burning incidents.
