Fishy biryani: Leftover biryani from Hyderabad is fed to fish!

Fish farmers in AP have found an interesting way to make their product fatter

The world famous Hyderabadi biryani is everywhere. Even inside fish, meant for the busy Kolkata markets. It has been revealed that several tonnes of leftover biryani from Hyderabad is being fed to fish bred at fisheries in the Krishna, Guntur, East and West Godavari districts. Those in the business of breeding fish claim the biryani has actually made their product “fatter and better”.

Farms in these districts are primary suppliers to markets across West Bengal. According to a report, fleets of trucks go through Hyderabad to pick up leftover biryani from over 1,000 restaurants. It’s even cheaper than the usual dish because leftovers cost just Rs 50 per kilo. The biryani is then mixed with other fish feed and fed to carnivorous or omnivorous fish.

The fish farmers are especially happy with the low rates they’ve been offered by city hotels and claim the mixture of biryani is helping fish reach normal weight in just months. “Fish that normally take 10 to 12 months to reach the necessary weight can do it in eight to ten months if fed animal waste or biryani,” a farmer was quoted as saying in the report by The Telegraph. It has also been reported that Andhra’s fish farmers supply nearly 500 tonnes of both rohu and katla to states in the East almost on a daily basis.
