Hyderabad: Only when citizens complain about pigs roaming around in the city areas, will the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation act.
Rearing of pigs within the city limits is illegal, claims the GHMC. But pigs continue to be spotted around garbage bins.
Dr Govardhan Reddy, a vet with the GHMC, said, “Pigs are not allowed to be reared within the GHMC limits. Action can be initiated against people doing so.
So far, there have not been any complaints.” The same rules apply to the SCB limits too. But there is no clarity on where the complaint should be lodged or what feedback the complainant can expect.
One officer explained, “Whenever our officers spot pigs during their rounds they take action. But it is for citizens to take the initiative and report it.” Pigs can cause brain fever and it is important to keep them away from humans.
