Man gets three life terms for murder
Karur: A lower court on Tuesday awarded three life sentences to a 34-year-old man who murdered a 30-year-old pregnant woman and relieved her of her jewellery at Karur. According to the prosecution, ‘Finance’ Raja alias Murugavel of Upplipalayam in Dindigul district, approached the woman, Kavitha, at Mattaparai Thottam village, near Karur, on October 13, 2011, and asked for water to drink. When she turned to go into the house to fetch the water, he followed her and stabbed her in the stomach. He snatched her 5 sovereign gold thali chain and her mobile phone before fleeing.
The father-in-law of the victim, who came to the house, noticed Kavitha lying in a pool of blood and rushed her to a hospital. But, she died on way. Based on his complaint, the Velliyanani police arrested the accused on October 29, 2011 and filed murder charges against him before the fast track mahila court at Karur.
Judge of the fast track district mahila court M. Gunasekaran, in his ruling, observed that the crime was proved beyond reasonable doubts, and awarded three life sentences to him. The judge also slapped a fine of Rs1,000 on three counts on the accused. If he failed to remit the fine, he should undergo nine months more imprisonment and the sentences would run concurrently, the judge added.
