BNS Reddy: Will address cops woes

Several CCTV cameras installed across the city and it is helping us monitor traffic and law

BENGALURU: Senior IPS officer B.N.S. Reddy, who was promoted to the rank of Inspector General of Police recently, took charge as the Additional Commissioner of Police (Administration) of Bengaluru on Monday.

In an interview to Deccan Chronicle, Mr Reddy said that redressing the grievances of the 18,000-plus police force and overhauling the administration will be his top priority.

“Our men, especially the constables and head constables who form 90 per cent of the city police force, need someone to solve their problems, which affect them both at the personal and professional front.

When they have a lot of personal and professional problems, how can they help the public? I have decided to hear their grievances first and try to provide them with solutions. I will try to bring in an effective system where our staff’s salary, promotions, gradations and increments are streamlined and monitored, so that they will be benefited.”

Asked about the staff crunch in the force, he said, “It is an old issue and it should not hamper policing and it will not. Every month, many policemen retire and till new recruitments are done, the posts remain vacant.

We are exploiting technology to overcome the problems faced by shortage of men. Already, there are several CCTV cameras installed across the city and it is helping us monitor traffic and law and order situation.

Also, it is helping us in cracking crimes. In the coming days, we will increase the number of CCTV cameras after identifying vulnerable locations,” he said.

Mr Reddy has an experience of serving as DCP of Central and South-East divisions besides working as Joint Commissioner of Police of the City Armed Reserve.

“With my earlier experience in the city, I know the problems our policemen face here. I will try to give them a better solution.”

Mr Reddy said that he wants to bring in transparency in the administration and take out the fear in the minds of constables in approaching seniorofficers.

"The constables have a sort of fear even to appraoch a sub-inspector and I want to remove such fear from their minds. When I was working as DCP of Central and South East division, constables used to meet me without any fear.

Even now I want to bring that change across the city. Any constable can meet me without any fear or hesitation, and interact with me," Mr. Reddi said.
