MK Stalin scotches rumours on quitting as treasurer
Chennai: Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam treasurer and the party’s heir apparent MK Stalin on Sunday denied rumours of his resignation from the party post. There had been widespread speculation that he might have done so to stake a claim for the post of party general secretary, which is presently held by party veteran and former finance minister K. Anbazhagan.
Speaking to reporters, Stalin said the news regarding his resignation, which was telecast in a section of the media, was false. “Someone with vested interests could have done this to create confusion within the party. I strongly condemn it,” he said. Stalin also clarified that he would only seek re-election as party treasurer during the party’s internal polls that will be held on January 9 to elect general secretary, treasurer and other key office bearers. He also said that the party district secretaries, including J Anbazhagan had called on him only to take his signature for filing nomination papers for the post of treasurer.
As soon as the news spread that Stalin had threatened to resign from the treasurer’s post as he was unhappy over not being elevated as the General Secretary, several party cadres, including some district secretaries, assembled in front of Stalin’s house early on Sunday
Refuting the reports, Stalin said, “I don’t aspire for any post in the party. I will work for the party without any expectations of party posts.” The party had earlier announced that the nomination fee for all the posts was Rs 25,000. Each nomination should be proposed and seconded by five general council members.
