VELLORE: The three-year-old female leopard, which was safely rescued by the forest officials on Saturday morning, died in the Amirthi forest on Sunday early morning when it did not respond to medical treatment, said Pernambut forest ranger G. Krishnamoorthy.
He said the animal died of a digestion problem, as its stomach was badly affected. The leopard got caught in a fence and remained entangled for hours together. This seems to have affected its insides, the ranger said. After it was rescued, it was taken to Amirthi for treatment with the idea of setting it free in the forest. "But we gave up the plan after it suffered a severe digestion problems," said Mr Krishnamoorthy.
The animal was treated by Dr Ravichandran, a veterinary doctor from Pennathur. Assistant conservator of forests Muthiah, range officer Murugesan and I did the last rites by cremating the animal on Sunday afternoon, said Mr Krishnamoorthy.
