Outsourced labour threat to Kaiga

No proper verification conducted for contract workers

Hubballi: Despite the terror threat looming large and a radioactive leak happening five years ago, there are serious lapses in the recruitment process of contract labourers which pose a danger to the Kaiga Atomic Power Station in Uttar Kannada district.

The plant authorities have lodged a complaint at local Mallapur police station against nine Assam-based nine workers for securing jobs in the plant by producing fake police verification certificates.

This has come to the fore after the authorities verified the whereabouts of the workers following the bomb blast in Bengaluru. The lapses have evoked sharp criticism from locals as they are apprehensive that Bangladesh citizens are entering the plant.

Many contract laborers from north India have gained entry just by showing identification certificates issued by local police stations of their states.

This is treated as a valid documents by the plant authorities without proper verification. Such laborers are given access to chemical labs.

All the nine workers, who have left work after serving nine months, were employed in the canteen of the plant.

"We have launched a search operation for the nine workers after the security wing lodged a complaint", said Mallapur police station police inspector Arunkumar Kollur.
