GPS to check illegal transport of fine rice

Nearly 95 such cases are under investigation in the district

Khammam: The government has plans to use global position system (GPS) and biometrics to prevent illegal transport of fine rice to be supplied for fair price shops and social welfare hostels.

There is a lot of demand for fine quality rice in other states and there is every possibility of misuse of the rice. Nearly 20,000 tonne of fine rice will be supplied to the FP shops and hostels in Khammam district.

There were instances in the district wherein hundreds of tonnes of rice, supplied through fair price shops, was transported to other states by the traders.

Nearly 95 such cases are under investigation in the district. A meticulous plan has been evolved to check misuse of it by keeping vigil from the godowns of Food Corporation of India from where fine rice would be supplied to the beneficiaries.

GPS devices will be fixed to every lorry carrying the rice and they would be connected to an online system. The vigilance cell would keep track of the lorries carrying rice to the fair price shops and hostels.
