Azam Khan, Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi lock horns over bungalow

Local SP leaders in Rampur say that the bungalow is the property of a closed sugar mill

Lucknow: The Samajwadi Party in Uttar Pradesh will stage a massive demonstration before the district magistrate’s office in Rampur to get Union minister of state for minority affairs Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi “evict” from his bungalow, which, the SP claims, is under “illegal occupation.”

Bungalow No. 3, located on Judges Road, Civil Lines, in Rampur district is where Mr Naqvi stays when he is in Rampur and this has been given as his permanent address on the Rajya Sabha website.

Local SP leaders in Rampur, however, say that the bungalow is the property of a closed sugar mill and has been illegally occupied by the Union minister.

Akhilesh Kumar, district president of the SP in Rampur, said, “We have the permission of UP minister Mohammed Azam Khan to go ahead with the agitation. We will stage a one-day dharna on January 7 and give a memorandum to the PM through the district magistrate.”

Meanwhile, sources said that Mr Khan has been eyeing the bungalow and wants to get it allotted to his Jauhar Trust. “He wants to renovate the bungalow and use it as a guesthouse for Jauhar University,” said an official.

The Union minister’s spokesman, meanwhile, said that a court had maintained their tenancy of the bungalow but Mr Khan was trying to grab the property by misusing his authority.

The Union minister said that there was no justification in Mr Khan’s claims and he had been living there legally for several decades as the sugar mill authorities had given the bungalow to his father on rent.
