Chennai: After using food waste to produce biogas, the corporation is now turning towards the good old method of converting cattle dung into biogas. The source of manure will be from the corporation’s slaughterhouse at Pulianthope. At least 2,000 goats and 500 cows are slaughtered every day at the slaughterhouse. The cow dung generated from the slaughterhouse which spreads over 10 acres will be used to generate biogas after a bio plant is set up in the locality.
“We are waiting for an inspection report carried out recently to set up a plant in the area. Once the report is obtained, action will be taken to set up the bio plant in the locality,” said a corporation official. About 15 tonnes of such wastes are bring disposed from the slaughter house every day. The Amma canteens in the locality which use LPG can use the biogas produced from this plant,” said ward councilor K. Sivakumar. “Unlike a few other canteens which generate gas for themselves, the gas generated is expected to be sufficient for to a number of canteens,” he added. “This project is expected to show progress in a couple of months.”
Some canteens run by the corporation are already using bio methanation plants to produce gas from the food waste generated in the canteens for more than six months. The Amma canteen in the Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital has a plant which can process 50 kg of vegetable waste a day. Two canteens in Perambur also have bio methanation plants.
