No plans for India yet: Miss America Nina Davuluri

Nina says that the winner has to give up personal life for a cause

“I made every Indian origin girl in America feel proud by winning the Miss America crown”, says Miss America 2014 Nina Davuluri, the first India-American contestant to have won the title.

Nina who is at her parents’ place in Vijayawada at the moment, shared her experiences with DC and said her success is the pride of Indian women in America.

“My achievement was in reaching out to the young girls who I knew were watching me win Miss America. What every young Indian-origin girl in America felt was that Miss America looked just like her and being a typical blonde, blue-eyed, white girl is not necessary,” she said.

“For every racist comment I received social media, thousands of American nationals supported me. I was able to raise over $92,000 after winning the crown,” she added.

Nina says that the winner has to give up personal life for a cause. “It is a full-time job. I have so far covered 2,50,000 miles across the world to visit different schools and colleges,” she added.

Speaking about her grandmother V. Koteswaramma, director of Montessori Mahila Institutions in Vijayawada, Nina says that she is an inspiration as she has provided affordable education for thousands of women for several decades.

About her plans to move to India, she says, “I do not have plans to move to India and take up anything. Right now, I am interested only in social service and plan to focus on pursuing MBA in America,” Nina said.
