Portion of road caves in due to sea erosion in Visakhapatnam
The compound wall of the Kursura Submarine Museum also collapsed due to this
Visakhapatnam: The coastal erosion issue raised its ugly head again at the fag end of the year as a small section of the road next to Kursura Submarine Museum here caved in.
As soon as the road caved in, the police cordoned off one side of the road to prevent any untoward incident, keeping in mind the thousands of revelers, who would throng the Beach Road at night celebrating New Year.
Panic gripped locals living near the shores in Bheemili and Yarada too, as sea waves came far into the beach. In Yarada the locals panicked, as sea waves came close to a church which they thought might get washed away.
Towards the end of January 2014, tides had caused the collapse of a section of the Beach Road. It was repaired, but the same portion of the Beach Road caved in on Wednesday. The compound wall of the Kursura Submarine Museum also collapsed due to this.
The Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation had made several promises for permanent measures to alleviating the impact of coastal erosion. Experts from IIT-Madras were roped in to assess the damage and suggest solutions in consultations with Pune-based Central Water and Power Research Station. However, nothing concrete has materialised.
The GVMC has temporarily dumped huge boulders to fill the site that caved in.
