Dharwad vs kalaburagi: BJP chief wants medical college in hometown

KALABURAGI: Is BJP state chtuief Pralhad Joshi stalling Congress chief in Lok Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge’s efforts to hand over the latter’s pet project-Employees’ State Insurance Corporation’s (ESIC) medical college complex set up here - to All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) so that the AIIMS project can be shifted to Dharwad?

The answer is yes going by the information made available by well placed sources in ESIC as well as in the Union government.

Mr Joshi, who represents Dharwad Lok Sabha constituency, is said to have persuaded the Modi led government at the Centre not to yield to Mr Kharge’s persistent efforts to hand over the Rs 1200 crore ESIC complex here, which was inaugurated by AICC president Sonia Gandhi in March 2014, to AIIMS.

Mr Kharge, who had taken the initiative to set up the ESIC complex during his tenure as Union Labour Minister, has stepped up efforts to hand it over to AIIMS as the new BJP government at the Centre, suddenly reversed its policies on running the medical colleges on the ground that it would drain the resources of ESIC.
