Demand to allow cockfights grows in Andhra Pradesh
Cockfights be conducted for entertainment in a traditional manner in Godavari districts
Rajahmundry: Public representatives have demanded that the state government declare Sankranti as a state festival and cockfights be conducted for entertainment in a traditional manner in Godavari districts.
They are going to submit a representation to Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu who will visit Chataparru village in West Godavari on Thursday to celebrate New Year with the villagers.
A majority of current and former MPs, MLAs, MLCs and other leaders from the TD, BJP, Congress and other parties are unanimous in their demand for allowing cockfights. They have maintained that the cockfights are part of the tradition and culture and without cockfights, the festival loses its significance.
With regards to betting, they claim that poor farmers set aside a small sum, while rich farmers keep aside around Rs 10 lakh. They say that if the farmers do not spend this money, they feel slighted.
