GPS can provide location to police
The GPS starts functioning only when the user clicks on the SOS
HYDERABAD: When the security settings in the smartphone was scaled down from high to low, the message during installation of mobile app, Hawk Eye-Hyd City Police, said: “This is at your personal risk and your phone may get damaged.”
Before installing the SOS app, it said the app would read the user’s location, and, importantly, that it would “modify or delete the USB storage.” “Many others apps show the same messages, but they will not harm the phone or the content,” an official said.
Asked about concerns over privacy by opening access to a cellphone to the police, Mr Srinath Reddy said, “Only details like name and mobile number are taken as they help the cops in tracing the victims through GPS. The Global Postioning System (GPS) starts functioning only when the user clicks on the SOS. The details only help in enabling the GPS and your privacy will not be at stake.”
Asked how different the app would be from the Dial 100 service, a police official said that the call-up service involves several manual processes and would take time. The GPS feature will allow the police to instantly find out where the complainant was.
